Heyhey, it’s #TicTacTuesday (but this time on a Wednesday)! The 143rd variety added to the Tic Tac collection is SEEDS: Jeera Black Salt. You may not have heard of jeera OR black salt before, unless of course you’re Indian. Jeera is cumin and black salt (or kala namak) is a salt with a sulphurous flavor to it. It’s gives food an “eggy” sort of taste.

This is the second variety I’ve acquired in the Seeds line from India. I really do love flavors of Indian cuisine and cumin is in my top 3 favorite spices (do people have favorite spices??). That being said, these are the most unusual Tic Tacs I’ve ever tasted and I very strongly dislike them. It really is the black salt that I cannot stomach. The sulphur is too much for me and I can’t get past it. Even when I eat things like “masala potato chips” it always feels like the sulphur dominates with it’s eggyness/fartiness. It’s not something I enjoy.

When you first put one of these in your mouth, they don’t actually taste like anything. It’s not until you bite into it, to reveal it’s dark unusual core, that things start to get uhhh interesting. The center of these feature crushed cumin seeds and if I try really hard to tune out the black salt, I can just barely taste the cumin and I kinda dig it. It’s just so hard for me to mute that sulphur flavor in my head though. It’s also hard to get the taste out of my mouth, even after only eating two of these and eating something else afterwards.

Weighing in at only 7.2g a pack, these are fairly tiny compared to the standard 29g for US packs. The frosted plastic adds a air of sophistication to the look. “Crushed seeds inside” is exclaimed on the front and the ingredients do show 1.8% crushed fennel seeds, although this is much lower than the 6.7% fennel seeds in the Saunf flavor I reviewed previously. The ingredients list also states there’s only 0.6% black salt in these, which is probably good it’s so low. I’m still trying to find one other Seeds flavor of elaichi ginger, so if anyone has any connections in India, please let me know! I would not recommend this jeera black salt flavor though, oh my.
